The Ferrari 458 Challenge made its racing debut last month at Monza beats by dre, and the spec race car appeared for the first time here in the U.S. a few weeks later at California’s Infineon Raceway. While we couldn’t make it out to Sonoma for the latter, we did get our first look at the 458 Challenge this past weekend at the Ferrari Racing Days at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

As with its road cars, Ferrari somehow manages to vastly improve the performance of each generation of race cars, and the 458 Challenge is no exception. Ferrari says that the 458 Challenge can lap the Fiorano race track about two seconds faster than its predecessor, and that difference translated to Laguna Seca. The fastest 458 Challenge cars were turning in times more than three seconds quicker than the top 430 Challenge cars. Even the fastest 430 driver, who set a new class qualifying lap record of 1:31.630, was half a second behind the slowest 458.

You can see our photos of the 458 Challenge at the Ferrari Racing Days in the high-res gallery below monster beats, and follow the jump to watch a video of the cars tackle Laguna Seca’s famous Corkscrew.

Coach, Phillip, Colton & cie

Continental takes world speed record

Continental has entered the Guinness Book of World Records with a top speed of 242 mph (388 km/h). We’re definitely not talking about the behemoth Bentley, as powerful as it is. The record now officially belongs to Continental Tires for its ContiSportContact Vmax Discount White Herve leger, which has been officially certified by those stout-chugging judges as the world’s fastest production road tire.

The rubber was tested on the 9ff-modified Porsche 911 that took the world record for the fastest street-legal road car. A custom 9ff cabrio also took the record for the world’s fastest convertible with a high end of 237.8 mph (380.5 km/h). Both cars are owned by 9ff chief Jan Fatthauer Discount Emilio Pucci Dresses, and the top speed runs were certified by Guinness.

As much as the car’s own capabilities, how it makes contact with the road (i.e. White Herve leger sale, its tires) often dictates a car’s limits. Just keeping the tires from melting (as they do on the Veyron after just 12 minutes at its 253-mph top speed) is a feat in and of itself.

Rick Rolled

Ron Paul, Rick Perry Hale Bob Dresses sale, and Mitt Romney at Thursday’s debate

The Republican presidential debate in Orlando was sponsored by Google, but it was Gov. Rick Perry who was searching. The frontrunner’s answers meandered. When fielding a hypothetical question about terrorists getting nukes in Pakistan, his response ribboned out like he was reading the first search results to come up. Even when he read his attack lines on rival Mitt Romney from the notes on his lectern Cheap Karen Millen Dresses, it was muddy. This was Perry’s third debate this campaign; with each successive one, his performance gets worse.

The race between the Republican frontrunners has been between electability and authenticity. “Paint Creek” Perry is one of you—he prays, he speaks plainly, he’s from a small town in Texas—and Moneybags Mitt ain’t. Romney’s pitch: He can beat President Obama Christian Audigier Clothing sale, whereas Perry is too reckless. At the debate, Perry not only failed to make the case about Romney’s essential phoniness, he turned the weapon on himself (Perry-kiri?), creating several self-inflicted wounds to the heart of his authenticity pitch.

The first wound came at the start. Romney and Perry got into a pushy book club debate, pointing to what the other had or had not written in their books and what lines each was pretending they’d never written at all. Romney continued his assault on Perry’s plan for letting the states run Social Security. Perry said he’d never suggested that for the larger Social Security system, but merely for state employees. This isn’t so. He was talking about the larger program not just in his book, but also since the book was published and since this campaign started.

Perry has made his comments on Social Security a symbol of how candid and authentic he is. At the last debate, he ducked the question of returning the retirement program to the states. For this debate, he constructed a diversion—a net reduction in honesty from his previous (less than straightforward) position. “There’s a Rick Perry out there that’s saying the federal government shouldn’t be in the pension business,” Romney said. “You better find that Rick Perry and get him to stop saying that.”

Perry evacuated the topic and sprinted for safer ground. He pointed out that Romney had changed the wording on health care in his book in between the hardcover and paperback editions. The changes were made to remove any suggestions that Romney once favored making his Massachusetts plan a national plan. It seemed like a good line of attack, aiming at people’s doubts about Romney’s core, but he got tangled. He tried again later to raise Romney’s position changes Discount White Herve leger, but instead of showing an instinct for the jugular, he became a word juggler:

I think Americans just don’t know sometimes which Mitt Romney they’re dealing with. Is it the Mitt Romney that was on the side of against the Second Amendment before he was for the Second Amendment? Was it—was before he was before the social programs, from the standpoint of he was for standing up for Roe v. Wade before he was against Roe v. Wade? He was for Race to the Top, he’s for Obamacare, and now he’s against it. I mean, we’ll wait until tomorrow and—and—and see which Mitt Romney we’re really talking to tonight.

Romney, whose answers were crisp and commanding throughout the night Discount Herve Leger v neck, showed again the benefit of having run before. He turned around the attacks on his record as a shape-shifter and made himself seem resolute. “My positions are laid out in that book. I stand by them. Governor Perry, you wrote a book six months ago. You’re already retreating from the positions that were in that book.”

The second problem for Perry came when defending himself against his executive order requiring sixth grade girls receive the HPV vaccine. He said he had been lobbied on the issue by a 31-year-old woman dying of cervical cancer. It was a rhetorical island of success in the stormy weather. Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer singled it out as the governor’s best moment. But Perry has a problem. He met with the woman after he made the decision to put the executive order in place. So it couldn’t have influenced his decision Buy Karen Millen Dresses, as he suggested in the debate.

The final problem for Perry came at another defensive moment. Talking about his decision to allow the children of undocumented workers to get cheaper in-state tuition, he said anyone who says the state should not educate these children “who have come into our state for no other reason than they have been brought there by no fault of their own, I don’t think you have a heart.”

Did you mean: I don’t think you have a heart problem?

Bob Lutz wins push-up contest on The Colbert Repor

Former General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz went bicep-to-bicep with “America’s ballsiest pundit,” Stephen Colbert Buy Emilio Pucci Dresses, last night – and came out ahead. Ostensibly Buy Chanel Dresses, Lutz was on Colbert to talk about his new book Cheap Bandage dresses, Car Guys Vs. Bean Counters DKNY Clothing sale, but as one might expect, the discussion veered into Mitt Romney vs. President Obama territory pretty quickly.

The actual car industry part of the discussion, though, revealed more potential good news for the Chevrolet Volt, the car that Lutz is obviously trying to make his legacy and called “a huge success.” Sure, Colbert talked about what his friends over at Fox News have been saying, but Lutz responded by predicting that sales would be “about 3,000 a month from here on out.” This would not only set a new record (Volt sales for March 2012 were 2,289, the highest so far) but would also put GM’s plug-in car into the 36,000-a-year range. That’s commendable, but still not where GM CEO Dan Akerson said last December things would be this year. Of course, Akerson’s 60 BCBG Dresses sale,000 number could have included the Opel Ampera and its Vauxhall twin. In any case, things are looking up for the Volt Discount Herve Leger gown, and that’s something Lutz is more than happy to tell Colbert or anyone else. Lincoln planning seven new improved models, includ

Replica Longines Watches for sale
The Lincoln lineup is in desperate need of a design intervention Replica Wyler Watches, and Automotive News reports that help is on the way. Ford product development boss Derrick Kuzak reportedly told dealers that Lincoln will receive seven new or refreshed models by 2014, including a little love for the long-ignored Lincoln Navigator.

The Navigator will reportedly receive the twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine option for the 2012 model year Replica Sarcar Watches, giving large luxury SUV buyers a more fuel efficient option. The Navigator could also receive some design tweaks, but we’re not expecting anything close to a full redesign.

The Lincoln sedan lineup will also get some attention, with the MKS and MKZ receiving substantial updates for the 2013 model year. The MKZ will reportedly be completely remade, with all-new sheetmetal that should look very little like its Ford Fusion counterpart. The MKS will also distance itself from its more pedestrian platform-sharing Ford Taurus How to buy Replica Dolce & Gabbana Watches, with a sleeker design and more premium materials.

Lincoln may also diversify their crossover offerings, including a new compact ‘ute based off the Ford Focus platform that should arrive during the 2013 model year. The MKX How to buy Replica Burberry Watches, which was just re-penned for 2011, is also scheduled to receive an all-new platform based off Ford’s global mid-size architecture for 2014. The MKT could receive a minor refresh for 2013, but then again Ford could wind up ditching the big crossover altogether or relegate sales of the model to livery and fleet customers.

A key component to future Lincoln redesigns will be minimizing any connection between the luxury make and any Ford siblings. Changes could include far more differentiated sheetmetal Replica Porsche Design Watches, different wheelbases and unique powertrains.

Toyota Tundra delayed to February ‘07

Fake BMW Watches for sale

General Motors and Ford can breathe a sigh of relief — the Toyota Tundra won’t be hitting the market until February now Fake Bvlgari Watches, quite a bit later than the “late 2006″ timeline originally promised by Toyota. Toyota engineering and manufacturing boss Gary Convis says the company is focusing on getting the quality right before putting the truck on the market; a good choice considering the quality problems plaguing Toyota’s current Tundra pickup offering.

Barack the Builder

The New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Timesall lead with President-elect Barack Obama’s announcement Saturday of a sweeping stimulus plan designed to create 2.5 million jobs by spending billions on infrastructure, education, and alternative energy. The plan is more expansive than anything Obama proposed during his campaign and eclipses the last stimulus proposal attempted by President Clinton in 1996. Front page and A-section stories also analyze Obama’s relationship with Hillary Clinton, who is all but guaranteed to become his secretary of state.

The LAT sees Obama’s two-year job proposal as “the latest indication that the president-elect has decided to use the transition period to influence events at a time of crisis, when the current administration appears powerless to stop a slide.” All three papers highlight the fact that Obama’s new plan is more aggressive and expensive than the one he proposed during the campaign, though the WP notes that Obama’s address was vague on specifics and price tags. (The Post also projects that the package will cost “well over” $200 billion, which would be “bold” compared to previous presidents’ similar plans.) The NYT and WP both consider the possibility that Republicans could block such an ambitious deficit-spending measure.

The papers all report that Obama is considering allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire in 2010 Replica Porsche Design Watches, rather than roll them back immediately. To do so would be to renege on a campaign promise, the NYT notes, but it’s also a no-brainer considering how the economic crisis has brought bipartisan agreement that the government should be pulling out all the stops to spur economic growth. Obama has scheduled a Monday press conference to introduce his economic advisers. The team will be led by Timothy Geithner, currently the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who Obama has selected for treasury secretary.

The NYT fronts a story about the “strategic courtship” between Obama and Hillary Clinton Wholesale Replica Romain Jerome Watches, who reportedly agreed to be Obama’s secretary of state late Friday. Their relationship first thawed, the soft-lede anecdote suggests, when Clinton gave a passionate speech asking voters to support Obama—a move that caused Obama’s senior aides to give her a standing ovation. Democrats close to the senators say the two got past their bitter campaign fight long before their party did, and Clinton’s tireless work on the campaign trail has proved her loyalty. The story’s final paragraph reports Clinton has also spoken to Michelle Obama several times recently about raising a family in the White House.

The WP reports nervousness in the Arab world that Clinton, the “most reliably pro-Israel” contender for secretary of state, will continue what they see as a lack of balance in the United States’ refereeing of the Palestinian-Israeli dispute. Clinton has made hawkish statements against Iran and has always spoken favorably of Israel, though supported the creation of a Palestinian state in 1998. Democratic senator Evan Bayh says Clinton is, above all, a “pragmatist” who will be most interested in a workable solution to Middle East conflicts.

The LAT fronts the post-election ire “liberal Hollywood” is feeling for supporters of Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California. Activists “continue to comb donor lists and employ the Internet to expose those who donated money to support the ban.” Prominent artists and companies have been “outed” by activists, including California Musical Theater director Scott Eckern, the Mormon director of the company that puts on the L.A. Film Festival Replica Tonino Lamborghini Watches, and the Cinemark theater company. A lone gay rights supporter in the story expresses reluctance at the notion of firing someone for their beliefs.

A profile of Michael Eisner in the NYT finds the ex-Disney chief “much happier” outside of the company he led until the “bitter, public fight” that ended his tenure. Eisner now hosts a talk show on CNBC and dabbles successfully in new media ventures that include a video site and a video production company.

An NYT review describes Guns N’ Roses’ first album in 17 years as “outsize, lavish, obsessive, technologically advanced and Imitation Hublot Watches, all too clearly, the end of an era.” Chinese Democracy Michele Replica Watches, which features front man Axl Rose as the only original member, belatedly comments on eras that passed while his band was off the stage, from Metallica to Nine Inch Nails to U2. Full of Rose’s famous indulgence, the record is a “letdown” that “leaves his worst impulses unchecked.”

A pair of reviews in the WP “Book World” section ponders the stunning achievement that is the modernization of the Hebrew language. Hebrew has developed a “new vibrancy” in less than a century, but is now, one author argues, “messy, boisterous, even chaotic.”

The WP “Style” section previews tomorrow night’s two-hour “prequel” of the 24 season that begins in January, in which iron-fisted counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer has moved on to humanitarian missions. The show still looks to be packed with sometimes-gruesome action Discount Replica Baume & Mercier Watches, but has clearly entered a new, post-Bush administration paradigm: “Torture has been discredited and abandoned as official policy. 24 seems to have gotten that memo.”

The only other small cars that Honda sells in the U.S. are its two hybrids, the Insight and CR-Z, and to date the company has kept production of its hybrid vehicles in Japan.

Vetting Vet

Sarah Palin and John McCain

As details come to light about Sarah Palin’s connection to the Alaska Independence Party, her husband’s DUI, and her teenage daughter’s pregnancy Fake Hublot Watches, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times Replica Titoni Watches, among other publications, have questioned whether John McCain “vetted” his running mate properly. Yet the Republican presidential candidate insisted Tuesday that the “vetting process was completely thorough.” Where does the expression to vet come from?

It’s a figurative contraction of veterinarian. The fancy word for animal doctor originated in the mid-17th century. The colloquial abbreviation dates to the 1860s; the verb form of the word, meaning “to treat an animal,” came a few decades later—according to the Oxford English Dictionary the earliest known usage is 1891—and was applied primarily in a horse-racing context. (“He vetted the stallion before the race,” “you should vet that horse before he races Replica Paul Picot Watches,” etc.) By the early 1900s, vet had begun to be used as a synonym for evaluate, especially in the context of searching for flaws. A character in Rudyard Kipling’s Traffics and Discoveries, published in 1904, says of a guard battalion: “These are our crowd. … They’ve been vetted, an’ we’re putting ‘em through their paces.”

Through the early decades of the 20th century, vet was primarily a Britishism. It became fairly popular in the United Kingdom during the 1930s, especially to indicate the examination of candidates for military positions, as well as the inspection of manuscripts or public speeches prior to delivery. In his 1936 biography of G.K. Chesteron, William Richard Titterton wrote: “[N]aturally each article of mine was vetted for libel with a microscope.” Over the next couple of decades, it gained traction across the Atlantic. Time magazine appears to have used the word vetting for the first time in 1945 but only in the context of a quote from “The Anatomy of Courage,” a newly published study on the psychological effects of war by the Briton Lord Moran: “A young subaltern with ‘dark eyes under long lashes Buy Cheap Replica B R M Watches, a pink and white complexion’ was sent to Moran for ‘vetting.’ ” The word first appears out of quotes in that magazine in 1959 (in an article on picking a new symphony director for the Los Angeles Philharmonic) Where find Replica Hermes Watches, pops up once in the 1960s, and then several times in the 1980s.

William Safire first tackled vetting for his “On Language” column in 1980. In response to a reader’s complaint that Newsweek used the word twice in two weeks Replica Alain Silberstein Watches for Cheap, Safire noted that “some dictionaries have it” and that “the Britishism is in vogue use in America today.” He dedicated a second column to vetting in 1993, which is right around when the New York Times started using the expression with great frequency—in reference to Bill Clinton appointees, among other topics.
